4 January – rabbit

Rabbit

Rabbit

So, many thanks for all the messages asking why I had given up after three days.  I’m glad to say I have taken a photo every day so far, but I admit the blogging of them is getting a little bit behind.

So, this is day 4, rabbit.  Rabbit is a knitted toy Catherine made for Martha.  We also have a rabbit, so he’s becoming a family fixture.  If you are going to commit to taking a photo every day, some days you’re going to be panicing late at night thinking ‘What can I take a photo of?’.  I had planned to take a picture of Martha, but she really wasn’t in the mood, so I took this shot of rabbit in her moses basket.

On the plus side, it shows a little of rabbit’s personality.  But clearly the composition is bad, it was taken late at night so the shadows make it look bad, the shadow from the moses basket handle is bad and so on.

In many ways this photo is exactly what this blog is about.  I rather hope that by the end of the year, even photos taken in that ‘bum, I’ve only got 10 minutes before I need to sleep’ time will be reasonable!

Comment if you must ;)

3 January 2011 – bauble

I’m quite a traditionalist, which means that the Christmas decorations don’t go up until the weekend before the big day and they stay up until the 6th of January.  That means there are still a couple of days available to take photos of the baubles on the Christmas tree.

I took loads of photos, and I think this one is the best (even though it would look better if the image was better centred).  I shot some this morning, but Christmas trees simply never look their best during the day.  So I tried again this evening.  I found it impossible to convey the glittery beauty of the bauble, but tell me what you think.

a lovely bauble

I’m off to respond to all your helpful comments so far.  Keep them coming!  I’m at work in and around St John’s and the Church Centre, so I’ll take my camera with me and try and get a shot from there.

2 January 2011 – gutter

One of the gutters at St Mary's

St Mary's Church, gutter

So, here is picture number 2.  I live next to St Mary’s Church in Ladybrook.  It’s a relatively new Church, consecrated in 1957 although it seems that this gutter was at least ordered in 1955!  Its close proximity means that its architectural features are likely to appear often if I’m going to get anywhere close to taking a photo every day!

My camera decided that this needed flash, but I prefer this second version with the flash turned off and I’m reasonably happy with the composition.  I’d be interested if anyone who understands photography better than me (which would be most people!), could advise on what could be done to get the relief design to stand out more.

Again, when I have more time I’ll be reading up on my f stops and exposures, but my camera tells me it chose ISO 400 and F5.0.

Comments are gratefully received!

1 January 2011 – lights

Christmas lights in a vase

Christmas Lights in a Vase

So, this is the first photo.  It’s been a bit of a day and there wasn’t time to take anything outside, but I thought these lights might look nice in a picture.   I think it might have been better to move the vase along, I don’t like the edge of the side in the photo.  Turning the lamp off at the other end of the unit might have helped.  I like that the object fills the frame.  I’m not sure what these things mean yet (but I’ll be learning) but the ISO was 400 and the F was 4.6.

As a first photo for the year though I’m reasonably happy with it.  If you have any thoughts and constructive comments, do feel free to share.
